Why does the job exist?

The Syndromic Surveillance funding portion of the CDCs Overdose Data 2 Action funding will be used to surge surveillance of opioid-related Emergency Department visits. Improvement efforts will focus on completeness, timeliness, and integrity of data being collected. Additionally, this position will support expanding the analytical, interpretation, and visualization capacities related to responding to the opioid crisis in collaborative efforts with a contractual partner.

The employee will conduct literature reviews related to gain a comprehensive understanding of how opioid-related data is being collected and used to better support innovative uses in New Mexico. They will build on this background of knowledge by analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing available data and improve data sharing capacity with opioid-related stakeholders in New Mexico.

After a year in this role, a success would be indicated by identifying insights and communicating them with stakeholders to support decision making that may impact overdose-related health statuses in New Mexico.

How does it get done?

1.) Assess and analyze data opioid related syndromic surveillance data.
2.) Create visualizations that convey opioid related syndromic surveillance data to stakeholders.

Who are the customers?

New Mexico Department of Health, health care stakeholders in New Mexico, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ideal Candidate

Preferred candidate will have attained a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology or Biostatistics;
Having experience engaging, communicating, and establishing relationships with novel stakeholders;
Experience with documentation and tracking projects, tasks, and progress of workflows;
Experience managing and manipulating large datasets;
Experience with data collection methods and interpreting research questions based on modified parameters of data elements.

Minimum Qualification

Masters degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics and two (2) years in Public Health to include data analysis and linking methodology. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds and some travel with the occasional overnight stay may be required.
