The Teacher’s Assistant (ASP) assists teaching staff in carrying out Afterschool Program activities, helps to maintain a positive and supportive environment, and is responsible for supervising the children and youth in classrooms, halls, school yards, etc., and enforcing all FYCC policies and procedures. The Teacher’s Assistant is responsible for complying with, and ensuring compliance with DCYF (Department of Children, Youth and Families), CA Community Care Licensing, Department of Social Services requirements. This person must be able to work a flexible schedule (some evenings); regular and predictable attendance is essential.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist and/or lead indoor and outdoor activities and field trips.
  • Assist in developing and carrying out lesson plans. Discuss assigned duties with Lead Teacher, teachers and other TAs to coordinate efforts. When a Lead Teacher is not available, take responsibility for directing any volunteers/interns.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the daily delivered student meals; Dispose of any uneaten or unused meals properly (i.e. composting, distributing at the end of the day).
  • In a timely and accurate manner, perform administrative and logistical tasks, and generate reports and paperwork as required, i.e., Case Referral Forms, Incident Reports, etc;
  • Instruct and monitor program participants in the use and care of equipment and materials to prevent injuries and damage.
  • Keep workstations, classrooms, and all spaces safe and clean.
  • Perform Front Desk coverage duties such as answering phones, transferring calls, monitoring who comes in and out of the building, and performing building closure duties as trained.
  • Model professional and ethical standards. Engage in productive and appropriate relationships with children and/or youth, parents/guardians, and staff.
  • Pick up children and/or youth from offsite locations and ensure safe return to FYCC.
  • Translate for those with limited English/Spanish proficiency. Help parents/guardians and students communicate with staff, volunteers and interns. Convert materials into the desired language (if you have a second language skill).
  • Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, and attending and actively participating in staff and individual meetings.
  • The TA is required to accompany program participants to off-site locations and to participate in indoor and outdoor activities and field trips.
Qualifications
  • Enjoys working with children and youth from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and is able to handle work-related situations with fairness and patience.
  • Relates to and interacts with children and youth in an age and culturally appropriate manner.
  • Reasons appropriately when needed. Consistent, sound judgment is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Is a Team Member. Is responsible for own involvement as a contributing member involving group decision-making and the development of a positive, cooperative learning environment;
  • Dependability. The job requires being reliable, responsible, and fulfilling obligations.

  • Fluency in a second language (Spanish, Cantonese, Arabic) is desired, but not required.
  • Must be available to work Monday - Friday 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • A minimum of six (6) units in Child Development desired or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • 1+ years’ experience working with children and youth.
License, Professional Degrees, Certifications:
  • Dept. of Justice Fingerprint clearance.
  • Must have/complete CPR and First Aid Training.
Medical Requirements
  • Must pass tuberculosis screening.
  • Must show proof of pertussis, influenza and measles immunizations.
  • Seasonal Flu shot
