Our client is seeking a Legal Assistant 1 with Spanish language skills to support intake functions within a government labor bureau. The successful candidate will play a critical role in handling employment-related complaints, particularly under the newly enacted New York State Freelance Isnt Free Act (FIFA). This position requires strong analytical skills, independent judgment, and a solid understanding of employment laws.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage intake of employment-related complaints
  • Review and analyze complaints under FIFA, which protects freelance workers statewide
  • Apply intake protocols to screen and process cases
  • Use sound discretion to resolve complaints or assign to attorneys
  • Ensure timely and appropriate routing of matters based on content and complexity
  • Communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking complainants and parties
  • Interpret and apply relevant State and federal employment laws
  • Maintain accurate records and document complaint resolutions
  • Follow internal procedures and legal guidelines consistently
  • Collaborate with legal staff and provide support on investigative matters
  • Conduct initial assessments to determine legal merit
  • Prepare summaries and memos for attorneys
  • Track and monitor case progress
  • Draft routine correspondence in English and Spanish
  • Support enforcement of legal remedies such as restitution or penalties under FIFA

Required Education and Skills:

  • Certificate or technical degree in Paralegal or Legal Assistant studies
  • Fluency in Spanish and English
  • Ability to interpret and apply legal rules and procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Prior experience in employment law, legal intake, or public service preferred
