As a Software Engineer II on our team, youll be an established performer who consistently applies software engineering principles to business contexts. Youll lead small, well-defined projects while continuing to support complex projects, and actively identify inefficiencies in existing systems. While you wont be deeply involved in architecture or system design at this level, youre expected to demonstrate strong insight into architecture, dependencies, and holistic technical thinking.

About the Team:

Join a newly formed team focused on transforming the car rental experience across Expedia Group brands. This team is building from the ground up, developing new product features and UI enhancements, and leveraging experimentation frameworks to drive innovation. Youll collaborate with global teams in India and Seattle and help shape the future of mobility in travel.

In this role, you will:

  • Collaborate with team members to co-develop solutions and solve problems

  • Lead small, well-defined projects and support complex projects

  • Develop and test software applications using our full-stack technology, including JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Kotlin, GraphQL, and REST APIs

  • Apply software design principles, data structures, and computer science fundamentals to write clean, maintainable, and optimized code

  • Implement schema designs to meet data requirements

  • Coordinate stakeholder input and collaboration efforts when developing solutions

  • Think broadly about policies and processes across the organization

  • Contribute to holistic solutions that link structure, people, process, and technology

  • Report clearly on work status and ask challenging questions when appropriate

  • Actively identify inefficiencies in existing systems and propose improvements

  • Gradually learn and contribute to both frontend and backend development, with a willingness to expand your skillset across the full stack

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field; or equivalent related professional experience (2+ years for Bachelors, 0-2 years for Masters)

  • Experience developing software in a team environment of at least 5 engineers, using agile methodologies and version control

  • Proficiency in building and maintaining software projects/products in production environments, particularly in public/hybrid cloud infrastructure

  • Strong knowledge in either frontend or backend technologies, with familiarity in the other - Our core stack includes JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Kotlin, and GraphQL

  • Familiarity with REST APIs, data stores, and API access patterns and integration

  • Understanding of associated technologies within the full-stack ecosystem

  • Ability to understand moderately complex systems and how projects fit together within the team

  • Experience with testing and monitoring tools, and debugging applications

  • Understanding of how team goals fit business needs

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies, especially in areas where you have less experience (e.g., frontend or backend development)

  • Ability to demonstrate insight into architecture and dependencies, even if not directly involved in system design

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with both frontend (JavaScript, TypeScript, React) and backend (Kotlin, GraphQL, REST APIs) technologies

  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms and microservices architecture

The total cash range for this position in San Jose is $122,500.00 to $171,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $196,000.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individuals knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
