The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC (University of California) San Diego is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for ocean and earth science research, education, and public service in the world. SIO operates 3 seagoing research vessels, which conduct physical, chemical, biological, geological, and geophysical studies of oceans worldwide. Scripps oceanographic research vessels constitute one of the largest academic fleets in the world. Scripps ships have state-of-the-art research instruments to study marine life, the oceans, the seafloor, and the atmosphere. Cruises vary from local trips to remote expeditions lasting up to 60 days (about 2 months) at sea. Scripps research ships, available to scientists around the world, have steamed more than six million nautical miles in support of science and the academic community.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego operates one of the worlds most advanced academic research fleets. These ships travel the globe, supporting cutting-edge research in oceanography, climate science, marine biology, and more.As an Electro Technical Officer 1 (ETO1), youll work at the intersection of seagoing operations and technology-maintaining the digital and electrical systems that keep our ships running and our science moving. What Youll Do

Working under the Chief Engineer and alongside experienced technical staff, youll:

* Support the installation, monitoring, and maintenance of shipboard Operational.

Technology (OT), including propulsion controls, engine room systems, navigation electronics, and satellite equipment.

* Deliver Tier 1 IT support for shipboard systems: wired/wireless networks, mobile internet, printers, scanners, and workstations.

* Assist in cybersecurity operations and network monitoring aboard the vessel.

* Collaborate with Scripps IT (ShipCIS) to resolve system issues and escalate when needed.

* Provide user support for crew, technical staff, and occasionally scientists during expeditions.

* Step in to assist with general electrical work, as required.

• Operational and theoretical knowledge of power distribution on seagoing ships and relevant associated electrical principles such as reactive power, resistance testing, redundancy, rating, grounding, and protection systems.

• Ability to observe, analyze and perform troubleshooting on various equipment, to include, new installations, and upkeep of existing equipment and identifying all marine electrical / electronic equipment.

• Knowledge of information technology systems and/or applications, including access procedures, networks, and/or databases

• Understanding of electronic theory and ability to perform all required equipment inspection, evaluation of performance, troubleshooting, preventive and corrective maintenance, and minor repairs to shipboard communications systems.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

• General understanding in the performance of shipboard emergency drills and working aloft.

• Ability to interpret electronics technical manuals, drawings, specifications, and schematic drawings.

• General working knowledge of shipboard electronics, network systems, IT installations and satellite communications. Proven skills for an ETO, especially in area of trouble shooting, new installations, and upkeep of existing equipment. Demonstrated knowledge and experience to identify all marine electrical / electronic equipment.

• Demonstrated understanding the proper use of a wide variety of diagnostic programs, electronic test equipment and tools. Skilled in diagnosing problems and determining appropriate corrective action.

• General understanding of the Electrical Safety Program and safety requirements of equipment.

• Ability to observe all safety rules and take appropriate precautions to ensure personal safety and safety of co-workers.

• Understanding of US Coast Guard and class society (ABS) regulations for electrical installations.

• Background Check required.

• US Passport required with ability and willingness to go to sea for extended periods of time.

• Ability to pass physical examination and U.S. Coast Guard (DOT) regulations for Chemical Drug and Alcohol pre-employment screening and post-employment random testing.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $85,796 - $124,988 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $41.09 - $59.86

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
