Legislative Advocate
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Policy Monitoring and Analysis:
- Track and analyze local, state, and federal legislation affecting older adults, aging services and relevant healthcare programs (Medicaid & Medicare).
- Prepare policy briefs, reports, and position statements to inform and guide DAAAs advocacy efforts.
- Advocacy and Outreach:
- Develop and implement advocacy strategies to influence public policy in favor of older adults.
- Build and maintain relationships with elected officials, government agencies, and community stakeholders.
- Represent DAAA at legislative hearings, meetings, and public forums.
- Community Engagement:
- Educate and mobilize community members, including older adults and caregivers, to participate in advocacy efforts.
- Organize and conduct advocacy training sessions, workshops, and events.
- Collaborate with community organizations and coalitions to amplify advocacy efforts.
- Communication and Public Relations:
- Develop and disseminate advocacy materials, including newsletters, social media content, and press releases.
- Serve as a spokesperson for DAAA on legislative and policy issues.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of aging issues and trends to effectively communicate with stakeholders.
Education:
- Bachelors degree in public policy, Social Work, Gerontology, or a related field. Masters degree preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in legislative advocacy, public policy, or a related area.
- Strong understanding of the legislative process and issues affecting older adults.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in using advocacy tools and technology, including social media platforms.
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Passion for advocating on behalf of older adults and improving their quality of life.
The Legislative Advocate will play a crucial role in advancing the mission of the Detroit Area Agency on Aging (DAAA) by advocating for policies and legislation that benefit older adults and their caregivers. This position involves monitoring legislative activities, building relationships with policymakers, and mobilizing community support for advocacy initiatives.
