Career Advisor

High Point University is seeking a 12-month Career Advisor in the Career and Professional Development department, working primarily with students in supporting them in their professional pursuits of future internships, employment, or advanced degrees. QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Masters degree in counseling, higher education administration/student development, or related field Experience and Training:
  • One to two years of career counseling or related experience, preferably experience in career development in an institution of higher education
  • Preferably one to two years of experience working in a recruitment or selection function in an organization
Knowledge, Skills, Ability:
  • Knowledge of organizational recruitment and selection strategies to maximize potential of students to attain high-quality internships and jobs
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills; ability to build rapport with students and faculty
  • Outstanding professional communication and writing skills
  • Strong presentation, technology, and social media skills; active presence on LinkedIn
  • Familiarity with Handshake software system preferred
  • Familiarity with WordPress software preferred
  • An exemplary “can do” attitude that will lead to excellent customer service
  • A commitment to being a team player who adjusts to changing work environments and organizational priorities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Assists students with the exploration of appropriate career options, career development, internship and job search advising through individual career counseling appointments and group settings
  • Administers career-related assessments and assist students in interpreting results, including but not limited to StrengthsFinder, CareerLeader, and other assessments pertaining to ones personality, interests, values, and workplace preferences; certification for assessments preferred but not required
  • Helps students determine the most appropriate fit for an academic major/minor and related careers
  • Prepares students to apply to competitive graduate schools, providing assistance with application process, personal statement and C.V. development, and interview preparation
  • Coaches students on how to develop and leverage a professional resume and LinkedIn profile
  • Assists students with internship and job search process, facilitating professional networking with alumni; disseminate employment and internship opportunities to appropriate faculty and students
  • Conducts mock interviews to prepare students for phone, Skype and face-to-face interviews
  • Conducts outreach and develop and facilitate classroom presentations and workshops in collaboration with appropriate faculty
  • Teaches career exploration and relevant business courses
  • Contributes to university initiatives and committee meetings as needed; in particular, develop strong relationships with chairs, department heads and faculty
  • Develops general knowledge and understanding of the related professions represented by academic programs and maintain familiarity with education, training and career opportunities and expectations
  • Develops programming that strengthens students preparation for internships, graduate school, and full-time jobs.
  • Analyzes data about use, interest, and value of presentations, one-on-one appointments, and programs
  • Represents HPU as needed during special events, including Family Weekends, Orientation, and Early Registration that may occur on nights and/or weekends
  • Works closely with Career and Professional Development staff members in planning of employer development activities including employer visitations, job fairs, career programs on-campus recruiting, and the development of job and internship leads
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Career Advising and Vice President of Career Development
ACCOUNTABILITY:
  • Reports to Director of Career Advising
  • Works closely with Career and Professional Development team
  • Interacts frequently with university and community partners
