Thermal Analysis Intern

A Snapshot of Your Day

Design of the secondary flow system and thermal analysis of a high temperature turbomachine is relying on the capability of fluid and thermal simulation software to accurately predict flowrates of cooling fluid, heat transfer coefficients between the cooling fluid, and temperature distributions of the parts being analyzed. Many of the correlations the analyses are based on are experimentally based and have been developed and calibrated over the years by Siemens Energy, based on data acquired during the operation of multiple turbomachines in laboratory and customer environments. These correlations are built into 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional analysis software tools that Siemens Energy has internally developed.

To streamline the analysis process and improve the overall design time, there is a need to port the correlations built into the proprietary tools into a unified computer aided design (CAD) and analysis software. The work performed by selected intern will be to identify the correlations built into the proprietary software, program these correlations into the new CAD and analysis software system selected by Siemens Energy, and test that the new software is operating correctly by performing analyses on selected test cases.

How Youll Make an Impact

  • Understand and port heat transfer correlations from Second Flow and C3D to Simcenter 3D

  • Conduct analyses of case studies to verify accuracy of the implementation in Simcenter 3D

  • Review test data and correlate them to secondary flows and thermal analyses performed in Simcenter software environment

  • Collect and summarize results of this effort in a final report

What You Bring

  • Bachelor of Science (Master preferred) in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering, currently working on an advanced degree (Master or Ph.D.)

  • Basic knowledge of fluid dynamics and heat transfer (undergraduate or graduate level)

  • Knowledge of Python, MATLAB, or equivalent programming language and scripting

  • Knowledge or prior experience on data acquisition and analysis

  • Knowledge or prior experience working on turbomachinery topics is a plus

  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
